Moving to Murcia, Spain: The 2027 Expat Guide to Climate, Costs and Healthcare

By Erika Davila · Client Manager at moveWise · Last updated: 2 November 2026
💡 The short answer: Murcia suits remote workers, retirees and families who want a sunny, mid-sized Spanish city with rents well below the big coastal cities. On our October 2026 budgets, a single person spends about €1,370 a month and a couple about €2,220, with rents at a record €9.9 per m² (Idealista, September 2026). Most non-EU newcomers use the Digital Nomad Visa or the Non-Lucrative Visa. Plan early for health insurance without copayments and your residence card appointment.
This guide is for non-EU remote workers, retirees and families considering Murcia. It shows what a month really costs, which area fits your life, how healthcare works for your visa and which paperwork you do locally.
It was prepared by MoveWise's Spain Legal Managers, who check applicants' income, insurance and documents against the visa rules every week. Every figure has a named, dated source; our own planning allowances are labelled. Data checked October 2026.
The pitfall it helps you avoid: assuming that a cheap city makes the visa easy. The income you must prove is set nationally. If you work remotely, start with our Spain Digital Nomad Visa service to see how the application works.
In this guide:
👉 Rents at a record, but low for Spain. Murcia's asking rent hit €9.9 per m² in September 2026, up 3.3% in a year, against a national €15.1 (Idealista).
👉 New bus and tram fares. From 30 November 2026, buses and tram share one fare system: a €35 monthly pass with unlimited travel, €25 for students, single tickets of €1.35 by card (€1.50 cash), free transfers and free travel under 7. The pay-as-you-go card rises from €0.70 to €1.10 a trip. These figures come from local press reports on the municipal ordinance, so check the operator's fare page before you buy.
👉 Visa thresholds. The minimum wage rose to €1,221 a month in 14 payments (Real Decreto 126/2026), so the Digital Nomad Visa is about €2,849 gross a month for applications filed in Spain. The IPREM is still €600, so Non-Lucrative Visa figures are unchanged.
👉 Passport stamps. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has replaced passport stamps for short-stay travellers (European Commission). If you enter as a visitor and apply for the Digital Nomad Visa from Spain, keep your boarding passes. Long-stay (D) visa holders are outside the system and may still be stamped.
👉 A provisional housing decree. Real Decreto-ley 29/2026, in force since 8 October 2026, lapses unless Parliament approves it. It caps annual rent updates at 2% until the end of 2027 unless both parties agree otherwise, and tightens seasonal leases (BOE consolidated text).
👉 No rent caps in Murcia. As of 30 September 2026, no municipality in the region had been declared a stressed housing zone (zona tensionada), so the Housing Law's special rent limits do not apply.
Murcia fits if you want a real Spanish city with low rents and fast links to the coast and Madrid, and can live with very hot summers.
✅ Remote workers on a budget. A single person's budget is about half the Digital Nomad Visa minimum filed from Spain. Compare other options in our ranking of the best cities in Spain for digital nomads.
✅ Retirees on the Non-Lucrative Visa. A couple's budget sits well below the visa's €3,000 a month, even with older applicants' higher insurance premiums.
✅ Families who want Spanish-language public schools and a larger flat for the money.
❌ Beach-first lifestyles. The city is inland: look at Cartagena, the Mar Menor or our guide to moving to Alicante.
❌ People who struggle with heat. July and August average maximums are above 34 °C at the city's weather station.
❌ Those who need a big international job market or many long-haul flights. A bigger city such as Valencia may suit you better; compare regions in our guide to the best places to live in Spain.
👉 Check whether your income fits the Spain Digital Nomad Visa — answer a few questions and a MoveWise Client Manager will tell you honestly whether your income, contract and documents meet the threshold before you plan the move.
The municipality is the city plus dozens of pedanías, semi-rural districts around it. Idealista publishes rents for seven districts (September 2026 asking prices, per m² a month; 80 m² as the example).
💡 Pro tip: on the coast, a flat advertised in October may be offered only until June. If you are moving for good, ask for a habitual-residence lease (arrendamiento de vivienda), not a seasonal one.
On our October 2026 budgets, a single person in Murcia spends about €1,365.60 a month and a couple about €2,223.20, private health insurance included. That is roughly €673 a month less than a single person in Madrid and €506 less than in Barcelona on the same method, as set out in our cost of living in Spain guide.
How we built the budgets (single / couple), with the same method as our national guide:
Not included: a car, flights, private schooling and income tax.
Yes, comfortably. Margins before tax:
Two adjustments. A self-employed remote worker registered with Spanish Social Security pays contributions instead of private insurance and gets public healthcare through them; the amount depends on your situation (for example, whether you qualify for the reduced flat rate), and income tax, an accountant and savings also come out of the €2,849 gross threshold. A retired couple may pay more for insurance: at Rastreator's 2025 average of €125 a month for over-55s, the budget becomes €2,323.20, still €676.80 under €3,000.
💡 Pro tip: the Digital Nomad Visa threshold is gross income, not spending money. Ask a tax adviser what Spanish income tax will take before you sign a lease. Our Spain Digital Nomad Visa requirements guide explains the income rules in full.
⚠️ Common mistake: preparing an application filed from Spain to the consular €2,442. For the Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos (UGE-CE) we prepare to €2,849, because the lower figure gives the reviewing officer a reason to question the file.
👉 Planning to retire in Murcia? Ask a MoveWise Client Manager to check your pension and savings against the Non-Lucrative Visa rules — we will tell you whether your income or savings meet your consulate's figure with a safe margin, and how to document them.
Most non-EU newcomers use the Digital Nomad Visa (remote work) or the Non-Lucrative Visa (pensions or savings). Once here, you register on the padrón with the city council and apply for your residence card (TIE) with the National Police.
✅ Digital Nomad Visa (international teleworker). For remote employees and freelancers working mainly for companies outside Spain. Apply online from Spain through the UGE-CE, which has 20 working days to decide before positive administrative silence applies (art. 76 Ley 14/2013), or at a consulate. The threshold is 200% of the minimum wage: we prepare to €2,849 gross a month from Spain, +€1,068.38 for the first family member and +€356.13 for each additional one (UGE-CE FAQ).
✅ Non-Lucrative Visa. For retirees and financially independent people who will not work. You apply at the consulate (or visa centre) for your place of residence, not from Spain, with 400% of the IPREM, €2,400 a month or €28,800 for the first year, plus €600 a month for each family member, as income or savings (art. 62 Real Decreto 1155/2024; Ministerio de Inclusión, Seguridad Social y Migraciones). Our Non-Lucrative Visa requirements checklist covers every document.
✅ Families. Both visas cover a spouse or partner and children, with different rules for adult children and parents. Our guide to bringing your family on the Digital Nomad Visa has worked income examples for each household.
The padrón is your registration as a resident with the Ayuntamiento de Murcia, needed for healthcare, schools and the later public healthcare buy-in. Register as soon as you have a lease, with your passport and rental contract; the council's website lists the current appointment system and citizen service offices. Our padrón registration guide explains the documents and the certificate you will be asked for later.
Every non-EU resident needs a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), applied for with form EX-17 and fee 790 code 012, €16.08 for a first card (Policía Nacional, Sede Electrónica; amount set by Orden PJC/617/2025). You give your fingerprints in person, with an appointment (cita previa) for the province of Murcia. The Oficina de Extranjería de Murcia is at C/ Francisco Alfonso Hidalgo Martínez 38, Ctra. N-301 km 388, Cabezo Cortado, El Puntal.
💡 Pro tip: in our practice, fingerprint and padrón appointments can be scarce in larger cities, so look for slots as soon as your approval arrives. Every personal detail must match your passport exactly, including country of birth, or the TIE appointment can stall.
⚠️ Common mistake: planning to apply for the Non-Lucrative Visa after arriving as a tourist. It is filed at your consulate before you move; the Digital Nomad Visa is the route that can be filed from Spain.
Public healthcare is run by the Servicio Murciano de Salud. Access depends on whether you contribute to Spanish Social Security, so most newcomers start with private insurance.
✅ Digital Nomad Visa, self-employed: compulsory registration with the self-employed scheme (RETA) gives public cover; after the padrón, ask your health centre (centro de salud) for your health card.
✅ Digital Nomad Visa, employee: public cover if registered with Spanish Social Security; with a home-country certificate of coverage, private insurance in practice.
✅ Non-Lucrative Visa: public or private insurance with an insurer authorised in Spain; in practice private, and most consulates expect no copayments.
✅ Not accepted for the Digital Nomad Visa: travel insurance, reimbursement-only policies and policies with waiting periods or copayments (UGE-CE FAQ). Our health insurance guide for the Digital Nomad Visa explains the wording to ask for.
✅ What it costs: in October 2026, complete cover without copayments was quoted at €60.02 to €62 a month for a 24-year-old and €73.36 to €79 for a middle-aged adult (Kelisto, quotes for Madrid; prices in Murcia can differ). We found no published prices for over-60s without copayments, so get quotes early.
✅ Public buy-in after a year: with one year of continuous residence, padrón registration in the region and no other public cover, you can join the convenio especial: €60 a month under 65, €157 from 65 (Real Decreto 576/2013; Ministerio de Sanidad).
✅ Main public hospitals: Virgen de la Arrixaca (El Palmar), Reina Sofía and Morales Meseguer.
For how the Spanish system works overall, read our guide to healthcare in Spain for expats.
💡 Pro tip: ask your insurer for a certificate in Spanish stating "sin copagos" and "sin carencias"; it saves a round of corrections.
Families choose between public schools (free tuition, taught in Spanish), concertado schools (privately run, publicly funded) and private schools, including international ones. With no co-official language, children learn in Spanish.
✅ What it costs, national averages for 2026–27 (OCU survey): about €1,300 a year per pupil in public schools (books, uniforms, meals and activities), about €2,156 more in concertado schools, and more than €8,700 a year in private schools.
✅ Enrolment: living close to the school is a key admission criterion, and your padrón certificate is the usual proof of address, so register before the regional application window if you can.
✅ International schools: check each school's accreditation and fees directly; we do not rank schools.
Our guide to schools in Spain for expats explains the three systems.
You can live without a car in the city, but you will want one, or a good bus route, for the pedanías and the coast.
✅ Tram: one line with a branch (lines 1 and 1B) runs from the city centre along Avenida Juan Carlos I and Avenida Don Juan de Borbón to the University of Murcia campus, Nueva Condomina and UCAM–Los Jerónimos.
✅ Buses: urban and night buses cover the city and the pedanías, sharing the tram's fares from 30 November 2026.
✅ Rail: high-speed trains link Murcia del Carmen station with Madrid, and regional and commuter (Cercanías) services run towards Alicante and the south of the region. The State commuter-rail monthly pass costs €20 in 2026 (Ministerio de Transportes).
✅ Airports: Región de Murcia International Airport at Corvera, and Alicante-Elche airport, which many residents also use for its wider route network.
Check two things before you sign a lease: fibre coverage at the exact address and your time-zone overlap with your employer or clients.
✅ Connectivity: fibre and mobile prices are national. In October 2026, Digi offered 2 Gbps fibre plus unlimited mobile data for €28 a month, taxes included.
✅ Clients and employers: Digital Nomad Visa employees may work only for companies outside Spain; the self-employed may take up to 20% of their activity from Spanish clients (art. 74 bis Ley 14/2013).
✅ Tax: after more than 183 days a year in Spain you are normally tax-resident. Digital Nomad Visa employees not resident in the previous five years may be able to opt for the Beckham Law (24% on employment income up to €600,000), if they meet its conditions, with Modelo 149 filed within six months of the start date shown in their Social Security registration or certificate of coverage; ordinary self-employed people generally cannot. Check your case with a qualified tax adviser.
💡 Pro tip: if you are self-employed, register with the tax office (Modelo 036) and with Social Security (RETA, through Import@ss) in the same month your Digital Nomad Visa is approved.
Mild winters, long sunny springs and autumns, very hot summers. AEMET's standard values for the Murcia station:
Daily life follows the Spanish timetable: late lunches, late dinners and evenings outdoors. Spring brings the city's big festivities; the Mar Menor is the summer escape. Air conditioning raises summer electricity bills, so budget towards the €105 line even alone.
✅ Pros
❌ Cons
These are typical ranges, not guarantees:
✅ Official fees: for the Digital Nomad Visa filed from Spain, Modelo 790 code 038 per applicant, at the current amount shown on the official form; for consular visas, a fee that depends on your nationality; for the Non-Lucrative Visa, Modelo 790 code 052, €10.94 per applicant; for the TIE, €16.08 (Orden PJC/617/2025).
✅ Housing: the deposit (fianza) is one month's rent, and extra guarantees are capped at two months' rent on a home lease of up to five years (seven if the landlord is a company). The landlord pays the agency fees (Ley 12/2023). Our guide to rental deposits in Spain explains how to get yours back.
✅ Documents: a UK apostille costs £45 per document plus postage; ask two or three sworn translators (traductores jurados) for quotes.
With the maximum two-month extra guarantee (€990): €2,157.32, plus the 790-038 fee shown on the form, translations, temporary accommodation and travel.
With the maximum extra guarantee (€1,584): €3,383.28, plus consular fees, translations, medical certificates and insurance. The couple must also show €36,000 of means for the first year (€28,800 + €7,200).
Yes, for many profiles. Murcia combines rents of €9.9 per m² (Idealista, September 2026), mild winters, high-speed rail to Madrid and a full range of public hospitals. It suits remote workers, retirees and families who want lower costs than Valencia or Málaga. The main drawbacks are very hot summers and an inland location, so the beach is a trip rather than a walk.
€1,366 a month for a single person and €2,223 for a couple, on our October 2026 budgets. They include a 50 m² or 80 m² flat at Idealista's September 2026 rent, utilities, transport, food, eating out, private health insurance and personal spending. Rent is €495 or €792 of that. Income tax, a car and private schooling are not included.
€9.9 per m² a month on average in September 2026 (Idealista), so about €495 for 50 m² and €792 for 80 m². By district, Pedanías Este is cheapest at €8.0 per m² and Norte the most expensive at €10.8. On top of rent, expect one month's deposit and possibly up to two months of extra guarantees.
Yes, by a wide margin. On the same budget method, a single person needs about €1,366 a month in Murcia, €1,871 in Barcelona and €2,038 in Madrid; a couple about €2,223, €3,023 and €3,299. Rent explains most of the gap: €9.9 per m² in Murcia against €20.1 in Barcelona and €23.4 in Madrid (Idealista, September 2026).
10.6 °C in January and 27.6 °C in August are the average temperatures in AEMET's standard values for Murcia, with average August highs of 34.2 °C. Rain falls on about 37 days a year, 297 mm in total, mostly in autumn, and the city gets 2,967 hours of sunshine. Pack for heat from June to September.
Yes, if you contribute to Spanish Social Security, for example as a self-employed Digital Nomad Visa holder or an employee registered in Spain. The public system is run by the Servicio Murciano de Salud: register on the padrón, then ask your health centre for your health card. Non-Lucrative Visa holders normally rely on private insurance and can buy into the public system after one year.
No official price list exists. Private hospitals and clinics quote each treatment individually, so ask for a written estimate. Visitors are not covered by the Servicio Murciano de Salud without an entitlement, and a trip for treatment is a short stay, not a residence route. If you plan to live in Murcia, budget private insurance, from about €60 a month for younger adults.
Yes. A single person's budget of about €1,366 a month leaves €1,483 under the €2,849 gross threshold we use for applications filed from Spain, and €1,076 under the consular €2,442, before tax. A couple's budget of €2,223 leaves €1,694 under €3,917.38. Remember the threshold is gross: income tax and contributions come out first.
Four types of area stand out. The Centro suits people who want to walk everywhere (€10.3 per m²); Norte, around Juan Carlos I and Juan de Borbón, suits families wanting modern flats on the tram line (€10.8); El Carmen in the Sur district is handy for trains (€9.7); and the pedanías, such as La Alberca or Espinardo, offer more space for less (€8.0 to €9.5).
€16.08 for a first card, paid with fee 790 code 012. You give your fingerprints in person in the province of Murcia, with an appointment booked through the national appointment system (cita previa); the Oficina de Extranjería de Murcia is in El Puntal, on the N-301 at km 388. Bring form EX-17, your passport and your visa or approval.
Murcia makes daily life affordable; the visa still has to be right.
